Trade Relations

In 2008 Swiss exports to Indonesia reached CHF 405.5 mio which represents an increase by 4.3% from the previous year. Switzerland's exports to Indonesia consists mainly of investment goods with following structure : industrial machinery and engineering 44%, chemicals and related products 36% and electronics/instruments 8%. A steady growth of Swiss exports to Indonesia lasted until 1997 followed by significant decreases in 1998 and 1999 which reflected the extent of economic crisis and a period when investment activity retreated. 2001 saw the beginning of a sustained recovery and Swiss exports have meanwhile reached 90% of the peak level in 1995 at CHF 455 mio.

In the other direction imports from Indonesia reached CHF 193.9 mio. This represents a continued increase of 13.8% compared to 2007. Indonesia's export to Switzerland are mainly following goods : textiles, garments and footwear 27%, agricultural products 21%, chemicals and related products 18%, machinery and electronics 9%.
In 2008 realized direct investments from Switzerland to Indonesia have been recorded with over US$ 72 million. Having achieved this value Switzerland ranks number 13 among foreign investors behind Hongkong and the Netherlands.

There are over 50 Swiss companies including Swiss joint-venture firms operating in Indonesia. Important sectors are food, pharmaceutical, chemical, engineering, international forwarding and trading, to name a few.

Swiss-Indonesian relations are regulated in bilateral agreements amongst which are a development assistance (1971), an investment protection (1974), an aviation agreement (1978) and a double-taxation treaty (1988, revised 2007).
